Snes9xTYL is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator originally developed by YoyoFR for the PSP system. Snes9xTYL is based off the SNES module, and the original Snes9x version 1.39 emulator.

Features[edit | edit source]

Snes9xTYL allows you to fully load and play SNES roms off of your memory stick in either it's original format, or a rom with .zip compression. The latest version of Snes9xTYL developed by YoyoFR allows a number of features.

Render Modes[edit | edit source]

Snes9xTYL can use 5 rendering modes. Settings can vary from user to user depending on personal preference, and whichever mode yields optimal performance. These modes are:

  • Mode0: Optimized Snes9x - An optimized version of Snes9x.
  • Mode1: Origianl Snes9x - The original version of Snes9x without any optimizations.
  • Mode2: Hardware accelerated (using PSP's GU) - A hardware accelerated version that usually caused the PSP to run overclocked.
  • Mode3: Adaptive rendering Mode 2 + Mode 1 - A combination of Modes 1, and 2.
  • Mode4: Adaptive rendering Mode 2 + Mode 0 - A combination of Modes 2 0 and 2.

.ZIP Support[edit | edit source]

Snes9xTYL allows for full support for compressed roms within .zip files. However, any other compression format is not compatible.

Savestates[edit | edit source]

As with much other popular emulators, Snes9xTYL allows savestates (snapshots at specific points in the game). Savestates can be made at any time during the game via the emulator's menu. Savestates can be exported/imported among other users as long as they are properly converted and formatted for use with other emulators or the real system itself.

2 Player Adhoc[edit | edit source]

For games that support multiplayer, users of the same ROM and version of Snes9xTYL can be able to connect over Adhoc and be able to play multiplayer games over WiFi.

Overclocking and Speed Improvements[edit | edit source]

Within the emulator, the PSP can be overclocked to either 222Mhz (Sony's default), 266Mhz, or 333mhz. Due to this, any settings made in recovery (for firmwares that have it), will have no effect. Even while in the emulator. Also, there are multiple hacks a user can turn on to speed up the emulation's speeds. However, some of these hacks won't fully work for everyone.

Cheating[edit | edit source]

Snes9xTYL has a feature where a user can enter cheat codes via the emulator menu to use within the game.

Unofficial Versions / Improvements[edit | edit source]

Developers ChillyWilly, Ahman, and CaptShoe have all developed modified versions of Snes9xTYL. The main features that were added in these versions were that the emulator was now compatible with Slims, and ran on the 3.xx kernel. Also, the MediaEngine library that once only worked on 1.00 and 1.50 firmwares, can now be used on 3.xx firmwares as well as the Slim. Most major features from the 0.4.2 release of Snes9xTYL still remains in these releases. (Since they were all modified from the 0.4.2 release) ChillyWilly's and CaptShoe's version is actually an update version of Ahman's non-ME release.

Incompatibilities[edit | edit source]

Some minor incompatibilities has been reported and stated with ChillyWilly's and CaptShoe's release of the emulator. So far, these include:

  • The Custom Firmware Extender plugin will have to be disabled or the emulator will fail to exit back to the XMB.
  • The old config file cannot be used with this release.
  • The install of this version of the emulator cannot simply be done by a copy and paste of the folders from the download to the old folder overwriting old files.
  • Sound problems may occur from some of the speed hacks that might be in use.

Compatibility[edit | edit source]

Most games have been reported to work. However, some games such as Mario Kart, and Kirby Superstar won't work properly.
